The Oulu Community Theater has donated $1,000 to the youth education program at the Oulu Cultural and Heritage Center. Over the past 23 years, the theater group has donated more than $57,000 to schools and programs that support local youth.

The $1,000 will be used to build a large set of builder boards — notched boards that link together to form play structures. Builder boards promote working together, develop creativity, encourage problem-solving and teach three-dimensional thinking.

Children who visit the heritage center or attend summer school classes, provided by a partnership with the South Shore School District, can experience building replicas of log cabins, puppet theaters or whatever they can imagine. Students in a wood shop class at South Shore High School will make the builder boards as a service learning project.

Countless hours go into the Oulu Community Theater's musical productions. Their most recent production was "The Sound of Music."

South Shore Elementary School teacher Erika Suo said the organization enhances the community in many ways.

"Thank you so much to the dedicated people of the Oulu Community Theater for again making a contribution to the youth education program," Suo said.
