Icy roads, crashes widespread in Northland

Icy roads were widespread in the Northland early Monday, causing crashes on highways during the morning commute.

The Superior Police Department asked drivers to leave early and drive slowly over the Bong and Blatnik bridges.

All highways in Northeastern Minnesota were partially covered with ice, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation. Multiple crashes were reported on Interstate 35 in Duluth and on the Bong and Blatnik bridges, according to MnDOT. Traffic speeds were slow getting onto the bridges, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation. Multiple crashes were also reported on U.S. Highway 53 north of Twig and on highways 169 and 73 near Chisholm and Hibbing.
