Letter: Humane Society appreciates continued support

The Humane Society of Douglas Co., Inc. celebrated the 20th anniversary of the 5K Cause for the Paws walk/run Saturday, Sept. 8, on the Osaugie Trail across from Barker's Island Festival Park.

Ninety-seven participants, including Mayor Jim Paine, and 60 canine cohorts, enjoyed a beautiful fall day for the annual event. Congratulations to top pledge winners who received prize packages: Sophie Korn, child pledge winner, and Denise Volzer, adult pledge winner.

Emily Gleason won the 20th anniversary participant drawing of a one night's stay at Barker's Island Resort, a Top Hat horse-drawn carriage ride in Canal Park and dinner cruise for two on the Vista Fleet.

Lea Wermter won the $500 gift certificate at Campbell Lumber Do-It Center and Patricia Pollock won the $500 gift certificate at Lakestone Green Clean in the annual raffle.

Thank you to Officer Nick Eastman of the Superior Police Department and his K9, Marik, for making an appearance. Their demonstration was definitely an added bonus.

HSDC greatly appreciates the continued generosity of local businesses and individuals who donated a variety of raffle prizes, those who purchased raffle tickets, our extraordinary volunteers and participant supporters and their canines who are key to this event.

Kudos to Jean Kioski for her diligence in overseeing this fundraiser to make it a success.

Special thanks to our major sponsors, Superior Animal Hospital & Boarding Suites and Solid Foundations of Minnesota, and to all sponsors who are listed on the back of this year's T-shirts and sweatshirts made by On the Limit. Almost $8,400 was raised at this year's walk/run.

HSDC is also grateful to Mike Dodge of Dodgie's East End Tavern for once again holding "Buddyfest" on Aug. 26 to celebrate his dog's eighth birthday. All proceeds raised were donated to the Humane Society of Douglas Co., Inc., which appreciates all of the humans and their canines who attended and helped Buddy celebrate his birthday to support the shelter animals.
