UWS ROUND-UP: Baseball team snaps 12-game skid

The University of Wisconsin-Superior baseball team snapped a 12-game losing streak with a 13-3 rout of Finlandia University in the first game of a non-conference doubleheader Sunday at the NBC Spartan Sports Complex.

The Yellowjackets fell to 2-20 on the season with a 5-3 loss in game two.

Brandon Rolf, Nick McNosky and Alex Osness had three hits apiece for the Yellowjackets in their win, while Rolf drove in four runs.

Without the help of a hit, the Lions scored five runs in the first two innings.

Ben Bergman, a sophomore from Eau Claire Memorial, took a no-hitter with seven strikeouts into the sixth inning.

Daniel Logan had the Lions’ lone hit with a one-out single in the sixth inning.

Cory Albertson homered for UWS in game two; Stephen Albertson hit a RBI triple; and Zach Remund singled home Jordan Berrios, who also singled.

In other action, Aaron Krahn was hitless in five at-bats but drove in the winning run when hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Northwestern a 6-5 UMAC win over UWS Friday in St. Paul.

The Eagles (10-15 overall, 5-3 UMAC), who scored four runs in the second inning, needed a ninth-inning run to send the game to extra innings.

Jordan Berrios, McKosky and Ryan Castaneda each had three hits in a 15-hit attack for the Yellowjackets.

Northwestern also won game two 12-6.

Berrios led UWS once again with a double and two singles. Osness also had a double, two singles and two RBIs.

UWS (2-19, 0-6 UMAC) hosts Northland College at 10 a.m. today and Martin Luther at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Friday’s twinbill is scheduled to be played at Ted Whereatt Field.
