Tigers blank Oredockers (updated)
The Northwestern Tigers baseball team defeated the Ashland Oredockers 1-0 in the WIAA Division 2 regional semifinal Tuesday evening at Northland College in Ashland.
The Tigers’ run came in the top of the sixth inning and Justin Sedin was the winning pitcher, tossing a two-hitter with six strikeouts.
“Justin was at his best -- he located well, mixed his pitches, and had great pop on his fastball,” NHS coach Jovin Kroll said. “He has been improving throughout the year, and this game was a nice opportunity for him to display how good of a ballplayer he really is.”
Kroll also lauded the play of catcher Dayne Evanson and the defense, which played errorless ball.
“Our defense was exceptional, the kids made every play for seven innings,” Kroll said. “Dayne has really matured into an excellent catcher. He threw out their only base stealer of the night, and he did it on an offspeed pitch. He did a really nice job.”
Northwestern finished with eight hits, but the big one was an RBI single in the top of the sixth inning by freshman Brennan Werner.
Gervase Thompson led off the sixth with a walk, moved up a base on Nolan Gustafson’s sacrifice and scored on Werner’s sinking line drive to centerfield.
The Tigers also got two apiece from Gustafson, Sedin and Carson Holsclaw and one from David Wakefield.
Northwestern (14-6) now plays at Hayward (16-5) in a regional championship game at 5 p.m. Thursday. The Hurricanes advanced with a 10-5 win over Rice Lake.
Hayward swept a May 8 doubleheader from Northwestern by scores of 7-3 and 9-1.
“Hayward will be a huge challenge,” Kroll said. “They will have the HON Conference player of the year on the mound, they are the conference champions and the game is at their field -- but it’s an opportunity.”
Today’s winner will advance to Tuesday’s sectional tournament at Viroqua.
TIGER TALES: Only one Ashland runner reached second base. … The Northwestern girls were tied with Amery 6-6 after seven inning when the game was delayed because of rain. The game will resume at 5 p.m. today in Brule.
