McCann powers Huskies past the Rox

The Duluth Huskies rebounded from a 2-1 walk-off loss Saturday at Rochester with an extra-inning win Sunday at St. Cloud.

The Huskies were 4-0 coming into Sunday’s game against the Rox and made it 5-0 with a 10-7 win in 10 innings.

Trailing 7-5 after seven innings, the Huskies scored twice in the eighth inning on Michael McCann’s two-out double, then took the lead for good on McCann’s three-run home run in the top of the 10th.

Tim Holdgrafer finished off the game for the Huskies in the bottom of the 10th to pick up the win.

The Huskies (28-13, 4-1), who hosted St. Cloud on Monday night, host La Crosse at 6:35 p.m. today and Wednesday.

NOTE: The Huskies canceled Wednesday’s “Bark at the Park” event.

Rochester 2, Duluth 1

Saturday night in Rochester was all about the pitching between the Huskies and the Honkers.

The combined stats for the starting pitchers, Chad Tworek for Rochester and Hayden Shenefield for Duluth was 16.1 innings, two runs allowed along with three walks while striking out 13 batters.

Neither pitcher would be around at the end as Alex Baeza’s two-out double in the 11th inning drove in the winning run allowed Rochester to win in walk-off fashion.

Duluth put itself in position to win the game in the top of the 11th as it loaded the bases with one out. But moments later the inning came to an abrupt end as Hunter Bigge grounded into an inning-ending double play.

The Huskies scored first against Tworek as Nick Sogard scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.

Shenefield worked out of a jam in the fourth, but could not get out of the sixth as Rochester (18-22, 1-3) tied the game on an RBI single by Andy Armstrong. Armstrong finished the night 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and walk.

The game stayed deadlocked throughout the remainder of the nine innings of regulation as the game transitioned into extra innings.

NOTES: The Huskies grounded into five double plays in the contest, in the second, third, eighth, 10th and 11th innings.

Huskies 3, Honkers 2

Duluth won its third straight game on Friday night with a 3-2 win at Rochester.

The Huskies scored all three of their runs in the fifth inning and held onto the lead for the remainder of the contest.

Julian Escobedo had a single, Augie Isaacson knocked in a run with a sac fly and Escobedo scored on an error.
