Tiger girls roll in playoff opener
The Northwestern Tigers opened the WIAA Divison 3 softball playoffs with a 16-0 three-inning win over Barron Wednesday evening in Brule.
The Tigers only had six hits in the game, but the only one they ended up needing was Brooke Ogren’s single that scored Sydnee. Burns, who led off with a bunt single.
Northwestern scored three more times before making an out and eventually scored 10 runs overall in the opening frame.
Burns finished with two hits and two RBIs and Alyssa Little added a single and two RBIs. Karsyn Jones and Brecken Oswskey recorded the remaining two hits.
Allison Luoma, who threw just 34 pitches in the win, struck out five of the 11 batters she faced.
After committing an error on Barron’s first batter of the game, Luoma retired eight straight batters until Erickson singled with two outs in the third inning.
Luoma retired the next batter giving the Tigers an overall record of 15-5.
Miller took the loss for Barron (4-11), finishing with 10 walks and one strikeout.
The Tigers now host the Cumberland Beavers (13-4) at 3 p.m. today in Brule.
Cumberland advanced with a 12-0 five-inning win over Ladysmith.
The Tigers swept a doubleheader from the Beavers 5-2 and 9-6 at home on May 12.
