SPARTAN RDP: SHS hoop teams win, girls hockey falls in OT

The Superior High School girls basketball team won its home opener, the boys basketball team picked up its first win of the season, and the girls hockey team lost in overtime in Spartan action Tuesday, Dec. 4.

Girls hoops

The Spartans improved to 2-0 overall and in the Lake Superior Conference with a 48-37 win over the Hermantown Hawks in the SHS gym.

Niya Wilson led Superior with 19 points. Madisen Myer added 13 points and Chloe Kintop had eight, which included a pair of 3-pointers.

Ava Asgaard led the Hawks with 12 points.

Superior hosts Esko at 7:15 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7.

Boys hoops

Superior won for the first time in three tries with a come-from-behind 54-48 victory at Esko.

The Spartans, who trailed 34-27 at the half, were led by Xavier Patterson’s 19 points. Mason Ackley added 13 points and Ben Rhodes had 12 on four 3-pointers.

Jon Stodola led Esko with 14 points.

The Spartans host Duluth Denfeld at 7:15 p.m. Thursday.

Girls hockey

Raechel Painovich’s power-play goal in overtime gave Moose Lake a 3-2 win over Superior in Moose Lake.

The Spartans led 2-0 after two periods on goals by Isabel Franta and Lucy Drougas (from Arika Trentor).

But Moose Lake got third-period goals from Abby Painovich and Savannah Gamst to tie the game and force overtime.

Katrina Casper had 31 saves for Superior and Joe Wekseth stopped 25 shots for Moose Lake.

The Spartans play at Silver Bay at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6, and host Hudson at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.
