Cayden Laurvick and Gunnar Hansen led the Superior High School boys hockey team to a 6-2 come-from-behind win over the Chippewa Falls Cardinals Tuesday, Dec. 4, at Wessman Arena.

Trailing 2-0 after one period, Laurvick scored three goals and Hansen added two goals and two assists as the Spartans improved to 3-1 on the season.

The Cardinals didn’t waste any time as they took a 1-0 lead 18 seconds into the game when Isaac Lindstrom scored on a rebound. Carsten Reeg’s initial shot from the right point was stopped by Spartan goaltender Dayton Podvin, but the rebound went right to Lindstrom, who had an open net to shoot at.

Chippewa Falls had a chance to add to its lead with back-to-back Trevor Dalbec penalties.

Superior had the best scoring chances on the first penalty, but were stopped twice on 2-on-1 breakaways by Cardinal goalie Jaden Hoople.

The Spartans weren’t as fortunate on the second power play as Brady Fixmer poked home a loose puck after Podvin made the initial save on a shot by Blake Trippler.

Superior dominated the second period, outshooting the Cardinals 20-3 and taking a 4-2 lead in the process.

It was Superior’s turn with the quick start in the second period as Gunnar Hansen scored on a rebound at 36 seconds. Grant Sorensen’s initial shot from the left side was stopped by Hoople, but Hansen picked up the rebound near the right post and whipped home the rebound for his second goal of the year.

The Spartans tied it up four minutes later when Spencer Gudowski took a behind-the-net pass from James Bronson and scored on a one-timer from the slot.

Superior took its first lead when Laurvick flipped a rebound over Hoople with assists from Taylor Burger and Sean McCoshen.

It went to 4-2 at 12:13 when Laurvick couldn’t catch up to a long pass, but picked up the puck along the boards and centered to Hansen, who scored from the slot.

Hansen then returned the favor to Laurvick, twice, in the opening 3:21 of the third period.

Hansen nicely redirected a long pass from Grant Sorensen to Laurvick, who scored on the breakaway.

Before announcer Mel Mattson could complete the call on the goal, Hansen and Laurvick were at it again 24 seconds later on a similar play to the previous goal.

Superior will now play four straight road games beginning at Proctor at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 6.
